Spike Mills Inspired by decades of living upon the wild, rugged shores of Northeast Lake Superior, in Ontario, Canada, Mills creates powerful, dimensional carvings such as his iconic Gitcheegoomee planters and masks, as well as Moose antler raptors, bears and custom doors.
In addition to his large-scale carvings, Mills hosts two-hour clay workshops where participants use two pounds of clay to sculpt expressive masks, bear heads or personalized dog portraits. Designed to be welcoming and unintimidating, the workshops can be held right at a kitchen table, with all materials supplied. Each piece dries in approximately five days and can then be painted, allowing artists to further personalize their creations.
“Art should be hands-on and shared,” says Mills. “When people realize they can create something powerful with their own hands, it changes how they see themselves.”
With a growing following and a reputation for energetic, supportive instruction, Spike Mills continues to carve out a space where craftsmanship, creativity, and community come together.
