Richard Miles. I’ve been in love with photography since I was a teenager, taking photos with an old Rollieflex camera my dad brought home from Germany. It was a marvel of German post-war engineering and precision, with a top-down viewfinder and fixed lens. It had no bells and whistles like automatic light metering or through-the-lens viewfinders or telephoto lenses like my friends had. The 120mm film only came in rolls of 12, while more modern 35mm film came in rolls of 24 and 36. That taught me to be very careful with each shot.
I’m a California native. My wife and I moved to Africa and lived there for 8 years where I learned to love capturing wildlife with my camera. We now live in the Sierra foothills in lovely Amador County. I love capturing a moment in time and space with my lens. I want my photos to inspire and touch people.
I’ll never forget the first time a stranger purchased one of my photos. I was out walking when I heard an unfamiliar “cha-ching” sound on my phone, letting me know that someone had bought my photo of Yosemite. “I’m on my way,” I thought. I remember driving over snowy roads to Yosemite in winter to get that shot. Up an hour before dawn, I ventured out in the icy cold. My fingers were freezing. With the scent of pine in the cold air, I see the waterfall across the valley, snow piling at the bottom. I sure could use a hot cup of coffee! As the sky lightened, I clicked the shutter. I got the shot. And that’s the image that sold!
Since that first sale, I’ve sold photos to people all over the world. It brings me such great joy to think of my artwork hanging on other people’s walls. And I’m totally in it for that feeling.
